Let's Take the Train!

I'd like to say I set out to write a sequel to the fan favorite "Let's Take the Bus!", but truthfully the tune came first and the title wasn't decided until much later. The A and B sections of this tune were written almost six years ago during my freshman year at OU. They sat on a lead sheet waiting for a proper C section that wouldn't arrive for years to come. About three years later I started writing "Jack Bauer" which at the time included what is now the C section of "Train". (actually the first couple performances still contain this section, go to live archive and check one out!) Anyway I realized this section was completely out of character with everything else in JB and the whole tune flowed much more smoothly without it. Also, it was in the right key and had the right character to be that long awaited C section of "Let's Take the Train". The tune was finally done. Now to explain the title. The simplest answer is that I arranged most of the horn charts while on a train traveling through Italy in the summer of 2006. A book of manuscript paper, a pencil, and the Tuscon countryside...definitely worthy of a song title! Also "Train" and "Bus" are both instrumentals with A sections built on the 12 bar blues progression so it seemed a fitting title thus beginning the saga of the "Let's Take the..." songs.
